2022 MMAA Gala
The 2022 MMAA Gala was the first one the organization has had since the pandemic, and it showed in the best way possible! The theme for the event was “Homecoming”. It was a celebration of so many things that have happened over the past few years.
What is MMAA?
Modern Military Association of America is the nation’s largest organization that represents LGBTQ+ military members, veterans, families, and their allies. They provide resources for legal aid, education, advocacy, and support for the LGBT+ and HIV+ military and veteran population.
Their organization has historical implications, as it was the combination of Outserve and the American Military Partner Association. The unification of these two groups helped MMAA become the largest voice for LGBT+ military members and veterans as well as their families.
2022 MMAA Awards

This year, I was honored to receive the 2022 Military/ Veteran Spouse Leader of the Year award. This award is incredibly meaningful to me, as I consider my partnership with my spouse to be a motivating factor in everything I do. My spouse gave me the opportunity to be a caregiver as well as a partner. We have navigated tough situations all throughout our marriage. I am proud to stand for them and to celebrate being their partner.
I took a moment to thank those who had supported me, including Dr. David L. Albright (UA), HillVets, Wounded Warrior Project, the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, MMAA, and USAA. But there are also so many people who have helped keep me motivated. Behind every strong woman is a team of friends, family, and individuals who care. From my best friend in Maryland to one of my mentors in Georgia, another mentor in California, and my mentee and her spouse in Alabama, I am who I am because of the people I surround myself with.

Many of those in attendance were true trailblazers- those who had served in the military or alongside partners during the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell era. Others were transgender individuals who had served during the ban on transgender service in the military. It was humbling to share the same space with individuals who have true grit. I treasured the opportunity to hear several of these individuals speak about their service and experiences.

Also honored during the event was the CEO and Executive Director of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, Steve Schwab, who received the 2022 Non-profit Leader of the Year award. His acceptance speech focused on celebrating diversity and strength in the military and veteran community.
The night was incredible! I am excited to continue supporting the military and veteran communities through research, advocacy, and support!
